My last two drams of the excellent Whisky Lounge LondonFest were from Benromach. The Benromach Organic had been on my list for a while
(one of Ian Buxtion’s 101) but I found out that this had been discontinued, and
had been replaced with the Organic Special Edition
Benromach is one of Speyside’s smallest distilleries and
is located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres, in north-east
Scotland. The Benromach Distillery is owned a managed by Gordon &
MacPhail - a family business for over 100 years.
First released in 2009, Benromach 10 Years Old is a
multi-award winning Single Malt Scotch Whisky. It was the first aged product to
be produced since the distillery was reopened in 1998. Initially matured in a
mix of Bourbon (80%) and Sherry casks (20%) the whisky is transferred to
European oak Oloroso Sherry casks for a final period of maturation. The result
is a beautifully balanced dram, displaying a rich Sherry character, summer
fruit flavours, malt creaminess and a light peat smoke influence.
So What did I think?
Well my phone had completely given up by now and so I've had to 'borrow' the pictures from the Benromach website. Lovely golden colour, with rich sherry on the nose, crisp green apples and a light peat smoke too. Lovely mouth-feel, malty creaminess with blackberries and a little spice. A lovely 'entry level' Speyside whisky with a sherry finish and worth seeking out.
